Yep, she's back: minus a left arm and an eye, minus a few inches of hair, and more than a little banged up in the process, the indestructible, ever-resilient Honor is back from the dead--and she's got some 400,000 liberated POWs from Hades in tow for good measure. Picking up where Echoes of Honor left off, the ecstatic reunion that begins Ashes proves short-lived as Honor once again lives up to her nickname of "The Salamander," always ending up where the fire's hottest. In the longest book of this naval space-opera series, David Weber plunges his beloved heroine (now an admiral!) into a thick tangle of political plots, as she takes on a more mature, behind-the-scenes role than in previous books. But don't fret: there's still some good action as HH prevents an assassination attempt and Manticore and its allies test-drive their new weaponry. And quite a few characters get what's coming to them too, including a few who drop like picked-off Peeps. Honor Harrington ist wieder da! Und zwar buchstäblich von den Toten auferstanden. Wir erinnern uns - die Peeps, also die bösen Jungs aus der Volksrepublik Haven, hatten Honor gefangengenommen und medienwirksam zum Schein hingerichtet, um sie in Wirklichkeit auf den Gefängnisplaneten Hades oder Hölle zu deportieren. Das steht übrigens in dem gegenwärtig neuesten Buch, welches auf Deutsch erschienen ist. Honor schaffte es mit Hilfe ihrer Leute nicht aber nur, auf dem Flug nach Hades freizukommen und das Raumschiff mitsamt der bösartigen Cordelia Ransom zu vernichten, sie befreite danach auch noch eine halbe Million politischer Gefangener von Hades... Nun ist sie zurück im Königreich von Manticore und muß erst mal kürzer treten, denn ihr linker Arm und ein Auge gingen bei den ganzen Aktionen drauf. Während dies "repariert" wird, lehrt sie u.a. an der Akademie (Läßt da etwa Nick Seafort grüßen?), wird zur Herzogin ernannt und läßt sie den Baumkatzen die Zeichensprache beibringen. Alles in allem macht das einen recht geruhsamen Eindruck. Nur in wenigen Kapiteln beleuchtet Weber zunächst die Manipulationen der Feinde, seien es die Peeps oder die erzkonservativen Kräfte auf Grayson. Genug jedoch, um zu ahnen, daß es mit der Ruhe bald vorbei sein wird. Und da geht es auch schon los. Die Mantys haben die Zeit genutzt, um wesentliche Verbesserungen bei ihren Weltraumstreitkräften vorzunehmen. Noch denken die Peeps, sie seien in der Offensive, in Wirklichkeit werden sie genau dorthin gelockt, wo man sie haben will. Bei all den früheren Weltraumschlachten, die Weber in seinen Büchern beschrieben hat, glaubt man vielleicht nicht, daß es noch heftiger kommen kann. Doch es kommt. Die Peeps werden einfach hinweggefegt! Gleichzeitig gibt es aufgrund eines Mißverständnisses einen Putsch auf Haven, der jedoch niedergeschlagen wird und den Geheimdienstchef als letzten und einzigen Vertreter der Regierung zurückläßt. Dabei bleibt es aber nicht lange, denn das Militär hat die Verhaftungen und Hinrichtungen endgültig satt. Der Krieg scheint nach langer Zeit beinahe entschieden zu sein. Doch da schlagen die Peeps noch einmal zu. Während eines Staatsbesuches der Königin von Manticore auf Greyson wird ein Anschlag verübt, der den Premier von Manticore und andere Persönlichkeiten trifft. (Honor rettet das Leben der Königin und des Protektors.) Das läßt die Königin mit einer ihr feindlich gesinnten eigenen Regierung zurück. Da nicht abzusehen ist, daß die Serie damit endet, darf man auf eine völlig neue Wendung gespannt sein. Wird Honor in die Politik gehen? Wie wird sich das Verhältnis zu Haven nun gestalten? Man kann nicht viel mehr zu diesem Roman sagen, als daß er wieder brillant ist, mit neuen Entwicklungen und Wendungen aufwartet und einfach toll erzählt ist. Webers Figuren sind einprägsam und lebendig. Mit Sicherheit ist er der führende Autor von militärischer SF des neuen Jahrhunderts, wie "Starlog" zitiert wird.
