Atoms and Electrons - The electron theory
An atom is the smallest part of an element. In an neutral atom, the number of protons is equal to the number of electrons. The protons, the positive charges, are in the central core of the atom. The electrons, the negative charges, orbit the nucleus of an atom. The Hydrogen atom is the simplest atom. There is only one proton in the central core and one electron which is in an orbit round the central core. This atom is uncharged, neutral. If the atom gets a second electron it is negatively charged, so it is a negative ion.
