Hello2you, Please let me explain first why i write in English, i am a Dutch photographer, and simple English is just more easy 4 me then the
German language, so sorry upfront.
I was lucky to get work as a photographer and had to picture people (portraits & glamour), so about one year i was able to
make a living.
Many work, if not all ,was quite difficult for me, no cash 4 good fotostuff was one of the reasons.
You have to be creative then to get nice images.(no studio,not good lighting,no DSLR). Things changed over the years, now is possible to get real good quality-stuff for small prices, like the SB400.
Positive: Compact, price, ease of use, bounce flashing, fast on/off camera, weight and i-TTL.
Negative: ? , non so far. Compact: = means it fit in your shirt-pocket, ( Try that with a SB600 or SB800 ).
Price: = cheap, so money left-over for other things you need.
Bounce-flash: = no red-eyes or flat ugly lighting, you make just more pleasing flash images by turning the head up !
Weight: = it makes no difference if the SB400 is on your camera or not, you will not feel it, simply never in the way!
Power: = enough, and when you need more, go to ASA 200 or 400 or even more.
i-TTL: = clever flashsystem from Nikon, i not use it, you might like it.
When you want to get pleasing images from people around you this little baby is all you need IMHO. Let me try to explain this to you, now after many years of shooting people i believe just in nice light, can be the sun, or
a window, candles or flash, nice light can give you luxe images, (that are the pictures other people like), and that's what you
can get with this flash for sure.
Use it for general photography of the family, a birthday or wedding, animals, fast likeable portraits and so on. I use one myself on a D80 and it works very well for me.
Similar pleasing results i get from my Leica Digilux 2 which have also a bouncing small flash. For makro, productphotography etc. we use a studio.
For weddings we use also radioremote controlled flashes, yes, cheap E-bay triggers and old flashguns from Metz, Braun,
Vivitar and so on, such a system works on all camera's and gives nice results.(and cost same peanuts)
Many times the Nikon SB400 did it better! But that can also have been my mistake, still learning by doing you know.
