Michael Connelly war jahrelang Polizeireporter in Los Angeles und lernte das Polizeigewerbe von außen kennen. Bekannt wurde er mit seinen Romanen um die Gesetzeshüter Harry Bosch und Terry McCaleb, zuletzt besonders aufgrund der Verfilmung von "Das zweite Herz / Bloodwork" durch Clint Eastwood.

Als Harry Bosch nach drei Jahren im "Ruhestand" (er arbeitete trotzdem) wieder ins Hauptquartier des Los Angeles Police Departments (LAPD) zurückkehrt, bekommt er vom neuen Direktor der Behörde gesagt, dass dies nur auf Bitten von Boschs früherer Polizeipartnerin Kizmin Rider geschieht. Der Chief teilt ihn den "Closers" in Zimmer 503 zu, die alte, unaufgeklärte Fälle zu lösen versuchen. Davon hat das LAPD ungefähr 8000 Stück - ausreichend Arbeit für die nächsten Jahre, sollte man meinen.

Irving ist jetzt Deputy Chief, mit "strategischer Planung" befasst und kreuzt vor Zimmer 503 auf, um Bosch auf seine übliche "dezente" Art zu warnen, dass wenn Bosch die Ermittlung vermassle, nicht nur er selbst fällig sei, sondern auch der neue Direktor, der ihn wieder hereingeholt hat. Rosige Aussichten. Doch wer zuletzt lacht, lacht am besten.
Rider hat eine DNS-Überprüfung angefordert und einen so genannten "cold hit" erhalten: Diese DNS-Übereinstimmung stellt eine Verbindung zwischen einem weißen Rassisten und der Ermordung der sechzehn Jahre alten Rebecca Verloren aus dem Jahr 1988 her. Die Verbindung besteht aus einem Revolver, den der Rassist gestohlen hatte - bei einem Juden.
Becky Verloren war gemischtrassig und das scheint Bosch angesichts der Pulverfasssituation vor den Rodney-King-Unruhen 1992 von besonderer Bedeutung zu sein: Wurde sie Opfer eines rassenpolitischen Mordes, der unter den Teppich gekehrt wurde, um das Pulverfass nicht zum Explodieren zu bringen?
Mein Eindruck °°°°°°°°°°°°°°
Die vierhundertfünfzig Seiten des neuesten Harry-Bosch-Krimis lassen nicht vermuten, dass hier eine ganze Menge Zündstoff abgehandelt wird. Das offensichtlichste Thema ist die verpfuschte Ermittlung im Mordfall Rebecca verloren im Jahre 1988. Aufgrund politischer Rücksichtnahme im Vorfeld der Rassenunruhen zog Irving den Stecker heraus und verpasste sowohl dem traumatisierten, empörten Vater als auch den zuständigen Mordermittlern einen Maulkorb. Die Reaktionen waren, mit einer Ausnahme, ziemlich drastisch. Und die LAPD-Dienstaufsicht schwieg dazu, was den Skandal noch vergrößert.
Doch Bosch betrachtet sich inzwischen als Sprecher für die Toter, also für Becky, und zieht seine Ermittlung mit, wie er hofft, zulässigen Mitteln durch. Leider kommt dabei jemand ums Leben. Das wird Bosch natürlich sofort angekreidet. Als er selbst in Lebensgefahr gerät, nimmt der Fall eine unerwartete Wendung.
Die Ermittlungsbeamten haben 1988 nämlich nicht alle Alibis auf korrekte Weise überprüft. Und so konnte es dem eigentlichen Täter gelingen, ungeschoren davonzukommen und mittlerweile andere Mädchen zu bedrohen. Was Connelly zeigt, ist die Art und Weise, wie die Polizei-Politik die Ermittlungen so beeinflusst, dass eine Aufklärung verhindert wird. Das wiederum führt zu neuen Opfern, solchen psychischer Art: Becky Eltern leiden auf völlig unterschiedliche Weise, die nicht nur Bosch erschüttert, sondern auch den Leser. Von Detective Green, der sich selbst tötete, ganz zu schweigen.
Unterm Strich °°°°°°°°°°°°°°
Zunächst sah es auf den ersten Seiten nicht so aus, als wäre der neue Bosch-Krimi ein Reißer, aber dann wurde doch noch eine tolle Sache daraus. Man darf aber nicht vergessen, dass es dem Autor um viel mehr geht als nur darum, einen weiteren Serienkrimi abzuliefern. Er fordert dazu auf, Altlasten abzutragen und die Versager von damals, die heute Nieten in Nadelstreifen sind, abzusägen und endgültig in Rente zu schicken. Das ist eine ziemlich deutliche politische Botschaft. Möge sie nicht ungehört verhallen.
