This work presents a unified approach to the vibrations of elastic systems as applied to MEMS devices, mechanical components, and civil structures. Applications include atomic force microscopes, energy harvesters, and carbon nanotubes and consider such complicating effects as squeeze film damping, viscous fluid loading, in-plane forces, and proof mass interactions with their elastic supports. These effects are analyzed as single degree-of-freedom models and as more realistic elastic structures. The governing equations and boundary conditions for beams, plates, and shells with interior and boundary attachments are derived by applying variational calculus to an expression describing the energy of the system. The advantages of this approach regarding the generation of orthogonal functions and the Rayleigh-Ritz method are demonstrated. A large number of graphs and tables are given to show the impact of various factors on the systems' natural frequencies, mode shapes, and responses.

Friction, wear, and lubrication are very complex processes, and it is easy to find systems where neither of the explanations above seems to be applicable. A considerable number of fundamental and applied studies have focused on the nano-tribological properties of confined, molecularly thin films. Despite these efforts, the molecular-level mechanisms of friction and the corresponding functions of actual lubricant additives and surfactants at solid surfaces are only partially understood. To address some of these issues, thiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were studied in single-asperity contacts, as model systems for the natural boundary lubrication of solid surfaces by the aromatics content in mineral oil-based fuels and lubricants. Friction force microscopy, a technique based on atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the Surface Forces Apparatus (SFA) were used to investigate the effects of molecular packing, adhesion strength, and sliding speed on the friction of selected self-assembled monolayers on template-stripped gold or silver surfaces. The adhesion between a monolayer-covered tip and substrate was controlled by immersing the sliding contacts in ethanol or in dry N2.

This book presents elastic contact analysis in two-dimensional and axisymmetric using Boundary Element Method. The solution procedure includes the effects of frictional as well as non-frictional contact between elastic bodies. The first two chapters serve as an introduction into the field and give a literature survey of various approaches for solving elastic contact problems. In Chapter 3 the boundary element formulations for two-, three-dimensional and axisymmetric problems in elasticity are derived and numerical implementation using constant and linear elements is described. In Chapter 4, two-dimensional contact analysis between an elastic body and a rigid body, and elastic bodies is discussed. In the presented new approach for solving elastic contact problems, boundary element analysis and contact analysis are performed separately. Therefore the approach is easy to implement into boundary element programmes. In order to obtain accurate results, an incremental and an iterative procedure is applied. Hertz and non-Hertz with and without friction contact problems are studied. In Chapter 5, the approach is extended to apply axisymmetric contact analysis between two elastic rings which have a common central axis. Linear elements are employed for discretization. Internal pressure, interference between two rings and friction are taken into account. The computed results are compared with analytical solutions.

Naturally fractured reservoirs are becoming increasingly important for oil and gas exploration in many areas of the World. Because fractures may control the permeability of a reservoir it is important to be able to find and characterise fractured zones. In order to characterise a fractured reservoir we need to understand the effect the fractures will have on its overall elastic properties. Fractures are highly compliant compared to the relatively stiff pores, so fluid will flow between pores and fractures during passage of the seismic wave. In this book we investigate the dependency of shear-wave splitting on the elastic properties of the fracture-filling fluid in the low-frequency limit. We then solve the scattering problem for a single fracture embedded in a porous background, and use this fundamental result to develop a dynamic model for the effective properties of a medium containing an aligned distribution of such fractures. The models presented in this book will help develop methods for geophysical characterisation of fractured reservoirs and should be especially useful for specialists in seismic characterisation of hydrocarbon reservoirs and other porous fractured media.

A new Bowing Functions has been established and checked; a new approach has been established and checked regarding the 3-D effect (SS effect). A new function called "twisting function" has been derived associated to the 3-D effect. A new tangent stiffness matrix in space including shear deformations and 3-D effect has been derived. The effect of axial force on bending, shear & torsional stiffness has been included. All other effects of temperature, lack of fit, initial imperfections, support yielding, pre- twisting members, pretension in cables & cable sag have been considered. Mathematical model describing the effects of noise in the cochlea is formulated. We showed that this model could correctly describe the deformation of the basilar membrane and the fluid motion.The plate equations are obtained from the three - dimensional equations of the linearized director theory of the elastic plate. The resultant equations completely agree with those obtained previously for an elastic cosserat plate. It is important to note here, that we neglected the equations for the directors.We confined our attention to the steady - state response of the system to noise in solving both the potential flow and equation of motion of the plate (basilar membrane).The solutions were computed and they showed the sinusoidal spiking waveforms. This book, therefore, provides the missing link between abstract mathematics and its application to the human body especially the effect of noise which is often neglected. In this book an attempt is made to develop finite strip method for the elastic and limit analysis of reinforced concrete skew slabs, with various boundary conditions and loadings and to present the numerical and graphical results both elastic and limit in a way that they find immediate applications. The results are presented in the form of distribution coefficients for deflections and bending moments, for aspect ratios 1, 1.5, and 2. The effect of skew is investigated on behavior of skewed slab with various support conditions and subjected to various types of loads. The slabs having skew angles 0 degree to 60 degrees with increment of 15 degree are considered. The higher order finite strip technique is extended, to study the load deflection behavior of reinforced concrete skew slabs and to estimate the collapse load of slab. The Von-Mises yield criterion is used to develop yield pattern for square/rectangular and skew slabs. The proposed method predicts yield line pattern for reinforced concrete skew slabs, which is in reasonably good agreement with available experimental and analytical results. The plastic hinges formed, follows the yield line pattern.

Ch. 1 comprises the motivation to the study, the description and the historical background of the problems considered in other chapters. Ch. 2 includes all basic definitions, the governing equations and techniques that are exploited in the rest of dissertation. In ch. 3, the natural buoyancy effect on 2nd-grade fluid along a vertical plate is analyzed. The asymptotic method in conjunction with Pade¿ approximation, the LNS local nonsimilarity solution method and Keller Box technique are exploited to get the solution. Study of the natural buoyancy for 2nd -grade flow along a heated vertical plate with variable heat flux is considered in ch 4. The influence of dissipation term on natural buoyancy is discussed in ch. 5 for a second grade fluid along flat vertical plate. Ch 6 is mainly composed of buoyancy flow between two expanding/contracting vertical surfaces with variable temperature on both walls. Ch 7 is to analyze the natural buoyancy of second grade fluid in a deformable channel with variable heat flux at both walls. Analytic solutions of nonlinear problem arising in chapters 6 and 7 are developed by HPM. The numerical results are also obtained using method of parallel shooting.
