High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Operation Ke (?) was the largely successful withdrawal of Japanese forces from Guadalcanal at the conclusion of the Guadalcanal Campaign of World War II. The operation took place between January 14 and February 7, 1943 and involved both army and navy forces under the overall direction of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters (IGH). Commanders of the operation included Isoroku Yamamoto and Hitoshi Imamura. The Japanese decided to withdraw and concede Guadalcanal to Allied forces for several reasons. All attempts by the Japanese army to recapture Henderson Field, the airfield on Guadalcanal in use by Allied aircraft, had failed with heavy losses for the Japanese. Japanese naval forces in the area were also suffering heavy losses attempting to reinforce and resupply the Japanese forces on the island. These losses, plus the projected resources needed for more attempts to recapture Guadalcanal, were affecting strategic security and operations in other areas of the Japanese Empire.

It was designed as a replacement for the earlier Type 94 TK.The origins of the Type 97 lay in a prototype diesel-engine version of the Type 94 Te-Ke developed by Hino Motors in 1936. Although the prototype had a more powerful engine and larger gun, initial trials were not successful and the Japanese Army demanded numerous changes before acceptance. Hino responded with a modified prototype in November 1937, in which the engine was moved towards the rear of the chassis. This design was accepted and full production began in 1938. A total of 557 units were produced from 1938 to 1942 (56 units in 1938, 217 units in 1939, 284 units in 1940).

Although designed as an ammunition tractor it was also used for reconnaissance and infantry support. The lightweight Type 94 proved effective in Manchuria and China as the Chinese National Revolutionary Army had very few tanks or anti-tank weapons to oppose them, although the tankette's thin armor could be penetrated by standard small arms fire. After World War I, many European countries attempted to mechanize their armies. Knowing this tendency in Europe, the Imperial Japanese Army also experimented with a variety of armored cars with limited success. The wheeled armored cars were not suitable for most operations in Manchukuo, due to the poor road conditions and severe winter climate.

The Type 4 Ke-Nu (?????, Yon-shiki keisensha?) was an innovation created to increase the number of light tanks available to front-line infantry divisions of the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II, through the re-use of obsolete components with little thought to quality or capabilities.The original version of the Type 97 Chi-Ha tank had been armed with a low muzzle velocity 57 mm tank gun. Operation experience in Manchukuo, China in the early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War and against the Soviet Union at Nomonhan during the brief Japanese-Soviet Border War in 1939 revealed that this gun was totally inadequate against any form of opposing armor, and a new higher velocity 47 mm tank gun was developed. This was then installed in the Type 97 Chi-Ha medium tank to produce the Type 97-kai Shinhoto version, which became the standard main battle tank of the Japanese army. This left a large number of surplus Chi-ha turrets, which were later retrofitted onto the chassis of the obsolete Type 95 Ha-Go light tank, which had been armed with a 37 mm tank gun. The result was designated the Type 4 Ke-Nu. In total, approximately 100 units were converted in 1944.

Operation KE explores the air combat that attended the Japanese evacuation of Guadalcanal in early 1943 - a topic which has hitherto received very little attention. Operation KE was successful largely because Japanese strategic planning and tactical execution was basically sound. The traditional view holds that the Japanese got away with the initiative largely because the Americans let them; the US Pacific high command felt it was not worth the effort to try and stop them. Letourneau contends that this was not entirely the case. He argues that the Cactus Air Force and Guadalcanal-based naval units did their best to disrupt the evacuation, still believing that the Tokyo Express was bringing reinforcements and supplies to the 17th Army. Other US forces in the South Pacific did make a half-hearted and questionably-executed attempt to stop the Japanese, but were bluffed into adopting a "wait-and-see" posture. Operation KE focuses on the air war fought between the Cactus and US 13th Air Forces on the one hand and the Japanese Navy and Army Air Forces on the other, from mid-December, 1942 to mid-February, 1943. Phong Nha - Ke Bang, largest national park of Vietnam plays world-important role in conservation of unique nature and global genetic diversity. Investigation of forests allied to western border of the national park funded by Kreditnstalt fur Wiederaufbau - German Development Bank was realized during summer 2011. Current monograph presents main results of these studies including description of vegetation and data on inventory of local floras in area proposed for extension of the protected territory. Obtained data presented in this monograph indicate straight advisability of expansion of national park on territories with intact primary forests having full spectrum of habitats and living forms of indigenous nature of Indochinese Peninsula. This area also will play role of significant biodiversity flow corridor between protected areas of Vietnam and Laos. If protected areas of both countries were to be connected by explored and studied area, the combined reserve would be the largest surviving karst primary forest in south-east Asia.

Dragon continues to extend its scintillating line of Japanese subjects in its 1/72 scale model kit collection. The latest item is a Type 4 Ke-Nu? light tank. It isn?t as well known as the Type 95 Ha-Go? or Type 97 Chi-Ha?, although in actual fact it was a hybrid formed from these two tank designs. When operations in Manchuria and Russia revealed that the performance of the low-velocity 57mm anti-tank gun of the Type 97 was inadequate, it was replaced with a 45mm gun to create the Shinhoto Type 97. Some of the original and now obsolete turrets mounting the 57mm gun were then retrofitted onto the Type 95 Ha-Go. The resulting hybrid was known as the Type 4 Ke-Nu, and just 100 vehicles were created in 1944. As such, the Type 4 came too late to have any significant impact on the war, and most vehicles were retained to protect the Japanese homeland from the expected Allied invasion. Dragon has previously released both the Japanese Type 95 and Type 97 tanks as 1/72 scale plastic kits, but here the designers have done much more than simply plonk an old Chi-Ha turret onto an original Ha-Go chassis. In fact, this kit required a completely new upper hull to accommodate the larger turret ring of the Type 97 turret. Details on this model are exquisite. Indeed, although small in stature, this model of a rare Japanese tank is extremely well refined, and it would make a unique contribution to any Japanese WWII model tank collection.
